It is one of the most obvious but also easily overlooked marketing strategies: word of mouth. Director Christine Collins at New Castle Public Library has been intentional about not only inviting people to events she thinks they'll like, but also asking her library's users, Trustees, and Friends to do one simple thing: invite people to come to the library and enjoy what's on offer.
This combination of targeted, personal invitations (by phone or email), which Christine can make because she has gotten to know her town well, and intentionality about encouraging library champions to extend personal invitations, has resulted in solid attendance at programs, and new library visitors and users.
It's free, it takes only a little time, and it requires a light amount of planning. And . . . it's working!
